As part of the organizing committee of the Tax and Investment Forum 2024 that took place on the 27th and 28th of February 2024 at the JNICC, Dar es Salaam. CTI extends its sincere congratulations to the Ministry of Finance (MoF) and the Ministry of State, President’s Office, Planning and Investment for the successful event. This forum brought together stakeholders from various fields to discuss the latest trends and developments in taxation and investment.
During the event, there was a parallel exhibition session where CTI showcased various policy studies on manufacturing sector-related issues to the esteemed guests including the Honorable Guest of Honor, the Vice President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Dr. Philip Isdor Mpango, the Minister for Finance, Hon. Dr. Mwigulu Nchemba (MP), the Minister of State, President’s Office, Planning and Investment, Prof. Kitila Mkumbo (MP), the Speaker of the National Assembly of Tanzania, Hon. Dr. Tulia Ackson (MP) and other high-level Government leaders/ officials.
CTI's main objective is evidence-based policy advocacy through extensive research, surveys, and studies aimed at creating a conducive legal, financial, and economic environment in Tanzania to facilitate effective industry operations, prosperity, and national wealth growth. One of the studies that made significant advocacy was "Simplifying compliance of multiple regulatory authorities to enhance the ease of doing business," which was done in 2013 and led to the development of a Blueprint for Regulatory reforms to improve the business environment.
The studies showcased in this forum included, Growth Diagnostics and Competitiveness Study of the manufacturing sector in Tanzania, The state of counterfeit goods in Tanzania, Analysis of Regulatory and Fiscal Challenges in the food processing, Textile and pharmaceutical value chains in Tanzania, and Pilot Study to review the Impact of unharmonized Local Government Authorities (LGAs) Fees in the food and beverages sub-sector.
Representing the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Hon. Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, Dr. Philip Mpango during his speech, he addressed concerns about the impact posed by the current tax system on investment and business operations. He emphasized adapting tax policies to accommodate emerging trends like integrating small-scale entrepreneurs into the taxation framework.
In the other hand, Mr. Leodegar Tenga, CTI Executive Director, commended the Ministers for organizing the event and highlighted major industry issues such as power, infrastructure challenges, and multiple charges from regulatory offices and LGAs. He stressed the importance of promptly implementing the Blueprint reform to address existing issues effectively.
