Parliamentary Committee Engages Alaf Limited on Policy, Investment and Industry Challenges

On 25 January 2026, the Confederation of Tanzania Industries (CTI) organized a visit by the Standing Parliamentary Committee on Industries, Trade, Agriculture, and Livestock, led by its Chairman, Hon. Deodatus Mwanyika, to CTI member company, Alaf Tanzania Limited.

During the visit, Alaf highlighted its recent USD 25 million investment in a new colour-coating production line, reaffirming the company’s commitment to expanding local manufacturing capacity and supporting Tanzania’s industrialization agenda.

Alaf commended the Government for introducing the 4th Band of the EAC Common External Tariff (CET) and the 10 percent industrial levy, describing the measures as positive steps toward strengthening and protecting local manufacturing. At the same time, the company outlined several key challenges facing the steel sector, including the need for faster processing of VAT refunds to improve cash flow, access to EAC Duty Remission for critical raw materials such as rolling oil, paint, and GI used in PETS manufacturing, and the urgent need to intensify efforts to curb illicit trade.

Members of Parliament also commended Alaf for its strong commitment to corporate social responsibility. Among the initiatives highlighted were the Safal Swahili Awards for African Literature, support for Master’s-level students, and the ongoing construction of technical colleges in Arusha, which will offer both short-term and long-term technical courses.

In addition, the Committee acknowledged Alaf’s efforts in women's empowerment, noting that more than 150 women in Mombasa are supported through the production of safety jackets and other protective gear for the Safal Group.

The MPs further praised Alaf for the high quality of its products and encouraged the company to continue maintaining these standards as it expands its operations.
