High-Level Industrial Talk: Tanzania Vision 2050: Industrialization as the Catalyst for Economic Prosperity!

On 23rd July 2024, The Confederation of Tanzania Industries (CTI) with the support of Manufacturing Africa and TradeMark Africa held a High-Level Industrial Dialogue on Tanzania Development Vision 2050 and launched the 18th PMAYA Competitions at Dar es Salaam Serena Hotel. The event was officiated by Hon. Prof Kitila Mkumbo, the Minister for State, President Office, Planning and Investment.

Prof Kitila Mkumbo when addressing the manufacturing community emphasized the crucial role of support for industrial development in shaping the National Vision 2050.


“Investment in industrial development will be a strategic priority in the Development Vision 2050 to build local production capacity and reduce dependency on imported goods.” He spoke

He emphasized the importance of including industries in the national vision, citing the fact that prosperous countries have strong industrial sectors. Also, on the importance of developing industries and exporting products to stimulate national development, citing opinion surveys conducted in preparation for Vision 2050 that included 7,668 people throughout the country.

He added they were selected in keeping with the rules of sampling, and they identified five priorities to be present in the vision, with industries being number one.

“Investment in industries emerged as the foremost priority in thinking up the national vision, while agriculture, providing 65 percent of raw materials for industries, remains the second priority,” he stated.

On the other hand, CTI commended the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, H.E. President Samia Suluhu Hassan for initiating this bold move.

CTI Chairman, Paul Makanza said, “Historically, only three presidents have had the privilege of crafting transformative visions: the late Mwalimu Nyerere with his vision for political independence and the Arusha Declaration, the late President William Mkapa with the current TDV2025, and now H.E. President Samia Suluhu Hassan with TDV2050." 


He kept on emphasizing the need for strategic enablers like technology and human capital to accelerate progress, explaining the need to build a solid foundation of peace, stability, unity, and self-reliance.

He also underscored a governance structure that supports accountability, transparency, and participatory decision-making, along with “reflecting on our past, understanding our present, and shaping our future.” 

Unified strategies across government ministries and departments are essential to achieve national goals, he added.

Following the speeches was a presentation from the Keynote Speaker of the industrial talk, the Executive Secretary of the Planning Commission Mr. Lawrence Mafuru where he highlighted the forces for change in industrialization as the catalyst for Tanzania's economic prosperity from the TDV 2050 including the growth of the Tanzania population, environmental protection, enhanced production efficiency and product quality to compete globally markets, improve business environment and good governance and technology transfer.

“Tanzania Development Vision 2050 and the strategic options for sustainable economic growth include Progressive and inclusive private sector, efficient global value chain integration, well-developed human capital, digital economy, inclusive financial systems, connected infrastructure systems and implement effective Environmental and Social, and Governance (ESG) practices.” He added

In conclusion, he informed participants that vision 2050 will focus on manufacturing industries as pathways for economic transformation and also address barriers from laws and regulations at local, national, regional, and international levels.


Followed by the panel discussion consisting of seasoned industrial experts and industrialists namely; Prof. Samuel Wangwe – Consultant & Chairman at Daima Associates, Mr. Uledi Mussa – Director at MEAC Group, Col. (Rtd) Joseph Simbakalia – Former Managing Director of EPZA and Director General of NDC, Mr. Selemani Ali- Partner, Tanzania BDO East Africa, Mr. Yogesh Manek – CTI Councilor, Founder and Executive Chairman of the MAC Group Ltd, and Mr. Paul Makanza – CTI Chairman different views were presented in contribution to the development of an effective vision 2050.
