CTI Engages Minister Jafo on Container Charges Affecting the Industrial Sector

February 10, 2025, The Confederation of Tanzania Industries (CTI) held a pivotal meeting with the Minister of Industry and Trade, Hon. Dr. Selemani Jafo (MP), to discuss the impact of container fees imposed by Municipal Councils in Dar es Salaam to the industries..


The meeting took place at the Protea Courtyard (Seaview) in Dar es Salaam and brought together a number of high-ranking officials, including the Dar es Salaam Regional Administrative Secretary, Dr. Toba Nguvila; the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Industry and Trade, Dr. Hashil Abdallah; and representatives from various municipal councils within the region.


The primary focus of the discussion was to listen to and understand the challenges facing the industrial sector particularly in relation to container levies and how these charges impact business operations and industrial growth in the country.


Hon. Jafo emphasized that this meeting marked the beginning of a broader consultative process. He noted that the government, through collaboration between the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the Ministry of Finance, and the President’s Office Regional Administration and Local Government (PO-RALG), will conduct an in-depth analysis of the situation.


“In 60 days, the government will reconvene with stakeholders from the sector to work closely on identifying practical solutions to support the growth of our industrial economy,” said Hon. Jafo.


CTI Executive Director, Mr. Leodegar Tenga, expressed optimism following the meeting. He stated that the industrial sector is hopeful that the forthcoming discussions will yield actionable solutions that will strengthen the industry’s role in driving national economic development.


“Our main goal is to ensure that the industrial sector continues to grow and remains one of the key contributors to Tanzania’s economic progress,” Mr. Tenga concluded.
