The Confederation of Tanzania Industries (CTI) marked a significant milestone with its 31st Annual General Meeting (AGM) and Symposium, held on 12th December 2024, at the luxurious Four Points by Sheraton New Africa Hotel in Dar es Salaam. The event, which brought together industry leaders, policymakers, and innovators, centered around the theme “Integrating ESG Principles into Tanzania Industries.” It was a timely discussion on how businesses in Tanzania can embrace sustainability and environmental responsibility while driving growth and innovation.
A Vision for a Sustainable Future
The Symposium opened with a powerful keynote address from Dr. Fatma M. Khamis, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Trade and Industrial Development Zanzibar, who served as the Guest of Honor. Dr. Khamis's speech highlighted the importance of integrating Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles into Tanzania's industrial sectors. She stressed that sustainability is not just a trend but a vital part of the country’s economic future. By adopting ESG practices, Tanzania's industries can reduce their environmental footprint, improve social outcomes, and ensure governance structures that promote long-term success.
What is ESG, and Why Is It Critical for Tanzania’s Industries?
The concept of ESG was explored in depth during the Symposium by Mr. Enock Nyachae, Sustainability Project Manager at DI East Africa. Mr. Nyachae provided an in-depth breakdown of the ESG framework and its vital role in shaping sustainable business practices. ESG principles help companies address environmental concerns, create positive social impacts, and establish transparent governance practices. In his session, Mr. Nyachae also presented several case studies from CTI members, demonstrating how ESG principles are already being effectively integrated into business operations.
Among the standout examples were Watercom (T) Limited and PwC Tanzania, who shared their green initiatives and highlighted the practical applications of ESG principles in real-world scenarios. These companies’ success stories serve as a beacon for other businesses looking to adopt sustainable practices, and their contributions were applauded as key examples of how industries can be both economically successful and environmentally responsible.
The Future of Tanzania’s Industries Is Green
The 31st AGM was not only a platform for discussing industry challenges but also for envisioning a future where Tanzania’s industries are at the forefront of global sustainability efforts. As Mr. Paul Makanza, CTI Chairman, delivered his keynote address, he shared his vision of a Tanzania where industries lead in sustainability. He called on the CTI members to take proactive steps in adopting ESG principles. Mr. Makanza’s inspiring words set the tone for the day:
"Imagine a Tanzania where industries lead in sustainability and setting the standard for innovation and responsibility globally. This vision is within our reach, but it starts with us as CTI members. Let's take that first step toward integrating ESG into our businesses."
The call to action was clear: sustainability is not an option but an obligation that will drive the next generation of Tanzanian industrial growth. The CTI members left the event with a renewed sense of purpose, ready to take bold steps towards integrating ESG practices into their operations.
A Farewell to a Visionary Leader
The AGM also marked a bittersweet moment as Mr. Paul Makanza completed his term as Chairman of the Confederation of Tanzania Industries. Under his leadership, CTI reached new heights, strengthening its relationship with the Government and advocating for policies that enhance the business environment in Tanzania. Mr. Makanza’s tenure was marked by remarkable growth for CTI, and his efforts to promote industrial sustainability and responsible governance will continue to resonate within the industry.
In his farewell address, Mr. Makanza expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to serve CTI members. He acknowledged the tremendous progress achieved during his leadership and emphasized that the organization had achieved critical milestones, particularly in shaping policies that benefit Tanzania’s industrial sector.
"I am honored and privileged to have served you all. Together, we have achieved great milestones and strengthened our engagement with the Government, ensuring that CTI continues to hold a respected place at the table. I am confident that the new leadership will carry this momentum forward," said Mr. Makanza.
While the industry bids farewell to Mr. Makanza as Chairman, his legacy of leadership, advocacy, and commitment to a sustainable business environment will continue to inspire the next generation of industry leaders.
